Crossroads District

Like its name suggests, this historic district connects Downtown to Mid-town and is where our city often comes together. Originally built up with turn of the 19th Century brick warehouses and businesses that served the adjacent railroad lines, The Crossroads has seen booms and busts over the years. The neighborhood is now enjoying a well-earned renaissance as a hub for the creative community and Kansas City’s thriving food and arts scene (notably on the first Friday of the month, when people flock for First Fridays). Many original structures have been rehabbed and repurposed and new businesses continue to set up shop here, from makers to brewers, tech startups to hair salons, ad agencies to tattoo studios.

EV, as it’s often called, is a more adventurous and affordable offshoot from James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Smith, whose eponymous fine dining restaurant is right next door. The broad, seasonally influenced menu ranges from pre-meal nibbles to full courses, with more unusual options like duck tongue tacos, rabbit gnocchi and BBQ pork belly buns riding alongside must-have perennials like empanadas, chicken thighs with chorizo and a killer house-made hummus. When it’s not winter, opt for dining in public on the broad patio. Pro tip: It’s especially inviting at lunch, when much of the menu is half-price and wine from their interesting list is discounted $2 a glass.
