Poço dos Negros

Going down from *Calçada da Estrela*, the 28 famous Tram, slows down to pass in *Rua do Poço dos Negros*, gaining a new rejoice before rising into Chiado. Located in one of the most traditional areas of the city, close to *Rua de São Paulo*, in the transition between Santos and Bairro Alto neighborhoods, *Rua do Poço dos Negros* has always been an important axis in the city centre, integrating an area of commercial activities and services. Despite its centrality, as many of the traditional streets of downtown Lisbon, *Rua do Poço dos Negros* suffered an abandonment in the last decades with consequences in the disappearance of local trade and degradation of the built heritage. Nowadays a renew attention to the city of Lisbon, has enhanced its tourist and cosmopolitan character, opening up new opportunities to external visitors and investors. At the same time, the proliferation of urban rehabilitation projects created a clash with the existing reality and raised questions about the right of its inhabitants to their own city. It is in the intersection of these complex realities, that have been emerging many cultural and artistic institutions, new projects and alternative activities that aim to coexist and cooperate with the locals and traditional activities, opening new regeneration possibilities to this area.
