West Adams

Just south of downtown you’ll find West Adams, one of the oldest and most charming neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Known for its historic buildings, structures, and classic American homes, it is as diverse a neighborhood as it is historic. These days there is a resurgence with new businesses, programs, and restorations rising up each day in and around West Adams.

Raphael S. Soriano, an architect who helped define 20th-century modernist architecture, completed an International Style home in West Adams for prominent ceramicist Glen Lukens in 1940.

The history of the house, though, is as significant as its design. By the 1990’s the house was boarded up by the City of Los Angeles and in a state of decay. Seeing through the unsightly appearance, the house was protected and designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument by The Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee and West Adams Heritage Association in 2007. It was later purchased and carefully restored by its owner who worked with the award-winning M2A Architects. It's a story of rediscovery and renewal right in the heart of West Adams.
