Rice University & West U

Two of Houston’s most handsome areas nestle shoulder-to-shoulder near the classic Rice University and museum district: Rice Village, a local hotspot with a charming college town feel, and the adjacent West U, a stunning, oak-lined residential neighborhood that does the south proud. Vibrant and verdant, the walkable locale bustles with young families, hip professionals and academics, giving way to an eclectic and constantly-evolving mix of bars, boutiques, foodie fare and other gems.

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. But it’s something you can see every day, just before sunrise and sunset at the Rice University campus. This large-scale art exhibition from James Turrell – called “Twilight Epiphany” – uses 1) the natural light present at dawn and dusk plus 2) a special LED light sequence to 3) project onto the ceiling and through a massive aperture a 4) transformative composition of light and reflection and color that 5) you should totally check out. The pyramidal structure of grass, concrete, stone and steel is also acoustically equipped to host musical performances (awesome) and can accommodate 120 people.
