The name 'Brunswik' emerged in 1350 for the first time and is assumed to be older than the City of Kiel itself. 1869 it was suburbanized to Kiel, including the areas Blücherplatz, Düsternbrook and the adjacent district Ravensberg. Today Brunswik is – next to the city center – the most favorite shopping area and houses many cultural, academic or medical facilities as well as several ancient monuments.

The Old Botanical Garden was opened in 1884 and is today considered a natural and cultural monument. The little braided garden area is perfect for a romantic Sunday walk, enjoying the view over the Kiel Canal from the look-out or attending one of the readings at the literary house.
