Miracle Mile

Once a dirt road, the 1.5-mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard we call “Miracle Mile” is now home to iconic institutions like the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA), the La Brea Tar Pits and the Screen Actors Guild / AFTRA. Though it was originally designed as a commercial district catering to customers in cars, today a 15-minute walk takes you by Museum Row, bustling restaurants and Art Deco treasures. The development continues with major construction on museums, additional renovations and the Metro Purple Line Extension.

The staff at ACME hopes visitors won’t be intimidated. “Don’t be afraid to poke your head in,” says co-founder Randy Sommer, joking that he’s the Walmart greeter. Conversation is favored over shushing, and educational groups come through regularly. With the icy gallery myth shattered, students often return on their own. ACME got its start in 1994 supporting young and unrepresented artists — many of whom are now well known. Consider the ice broken, and come poke your head in.
