Passyunk

The Passyunk Square neighborhood is a walkable, diverse community with a mix of old and new businesses. The lines between irony, homage and tradition blur here. An upscale Mexican restaurant may be across the street from one owned by immigrants from Puebla. Coffee and beer live together harmoniously under one roof. Auto repair shops become bars... but keep their facades in the process. And a new generation appreciates the value of walking to everything. Passyunk Square is a vital mix, and it works.

It is not commonly known that 10th & Federal in South Philadelphia was the center of one of the largest Lebanese communities in the entire United States. Embedded within the more well know Italian community, the Lebanese community created businesses, a church, and many other institutions to support itself. Bitar’s is one of those institutions. Finer Lebanese food would be harder to find anywhere in Philadelphia. The baba ganoush is particularly delightful, but anything on the menu is worth trying (hummus, gyro, etc). Make sure to give the Angelo Cataladi sandwich a try. It is the perfect marriage of Lebanese meets Italian in a pita.
