Pilsen

On the verge of gentrification for the past 20+ years, Pilsen remains truly authentic, staking its' claim as Chicago's most colorfully embellished, ethnically diverse and culture-rich 'hood. Just southwest of the loop it is loaded with hidden gems and houses some of the cities most creative residents ... all camouflaged beneath layers of brilliant grafitti and street art (many of these works pictured below).

One day exploring the neighborhood, I happened upon a local ruin. The facade of an old church caught my eye because something was not normal. Light was pouring through the windows and doors. Turned out it was just a facade and all else had been excavated. A little research revealed the Podmajersky company that started rehabbing old buildings as artist lofts years ago, created this destination within the blocks of Pilsen for everyone. They "saved" the Evangelical Lutheran church at at 19th and Peoria by stripping it of its stained glass windows, altar, pews, and back and side walls leaving only its facade and spirit. It is lovely and works every bit like a church should.
