The Denver Zoo was the first zoo in the U.S. to create natural enclosures for its animals, starting with the Bear Mountain exhibit in 1918, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the zoo is home to over 600 species and averages over 1.6 million visitors a year. Most recently, the zoo celebrated the birth of Dobby the giraffe.
