Bairro Alto

Laid out in 1513, Bairro Alto is a neighborhood that truly changes from day to night. By day, this bohemian district is a place inhabited by elderly people and young artists, giving an atmosphere that is both traditional and avant-garde. By night, in “Bairro”, a new bohemian life begins, with bars and restaurants opening their doors and the street party atmosphere begins, mixing different urban tribes, straight and gay.

This tiny "pastéis de nata" (the traditional portuguese custard tart) factory has a stunning Art Nouveau façade, in a building where was once a butter shop. Inside, the custard tarts are continuously made in front of you throughout the day. When you hear a bell ringing is because a batch just left.
