Fitzroy North

If you're from out of town, I'd hope your local friends live somewhere near North Fitzroy. Located about a mile up the road from its bigger brother, Fitzroy, 'North Fitz' as it's known, is a smaller community oriented hub which is small in footprint and big in quality establishments. Cafes, bars and speciality restaurants populate the area and they are all genuinely worth visiting; if not just to befriend the hospitable, like-minded and genuine locals that frequent them. Most destinations in this guide are a (good) frisbee flick to the next, which makes this 'hood an attractive place to waste/enjoy your time over a morning, afternoon and evening.

El Chino is a Mexican cafe, restaurant and bakery that encourages only two attitudes: good times and and great vibes. The kitsch attitude towards the interior fit-out contrasts the seriousness of flavours head Chef Paul sends across the pass. This is real Mexican food, which even in taco crazy Melbourne, can be hard to find. Taco Tuesday is a particularly good night to head down - a choice of 3 tacos for $18 (cactus and the prawn tacos a must). But if you find yourself a morning without agenda El Chino's breakfast offering is also incredibly underrated.
