Richmond

With its outlook onto the Yarra River, the inner city suburb of Richmond is one of Melbourne’s oldest, yet still remains one of the liveliest. Boasting a rich cultural history of strong Greek roots, contrastingly the North of the suburb is best known as Melbourne’s Vietnamese district, often referred to as Little Saigon. Its diverse history of culture and industry form the backbone to this now gentrified precinct. Today, it is a hub for the creative industry, studios and fashion houses residing in the industrial backstreets of Richmond. Home to major commercial strips such as Swan St, Church St and Bridge Rd, Richmond boasts an eclectic range of eateries and nightlife. Take a stroll down these well-known strips or wander astray down unassuming side streets to stumble across something truly unique.

A slice of Richmond’s historic Greek roots, family business Hellas has been on the block since 1962. They’re obviously doing it right. It’s evidently a staple local business as tables and chairs extend down the street to accommodate the many devotees. Delicate, mouthwatering pastries are on display in long counter cabinets, while ornate, hand-lettered signs emulate the history of the establishment. Asides from the signature pastries they’re so well regarded for, Hellas also serves up a diverse array of breakfast and lunch seven days a week. So come in to enjoy a coffee and a pastry or just go all out with a breakfast!
