The State Russian Museum and Exhibition Centre ROSPHOTO is located in a building designed in the National Romantic style (a form of Art Nouveau) and was established in 1905. Over the last few years, the centre has introduced a huge number of photographers to the public, and, furthermore, pieces of contemporary art closely connected with photography, including video-art, photographic installations, animation, and experimental cinema. Even if you aren’t keen on photography, the building itself is a must-see. On the facade there are majolica panels created by the well-known Russian painter Nikolai Roerich. In the lobby and on the staircase you can find reliefs and stained glass windows decorated with northern landscapes and animals. What’s more, every hall of the Museum has its own unique ceramic stove. In short, Rosphoto is a small museum which is permeated with the classical look of black-and-white photography.
