Greater Sharpstown encompasses an area of approximately 10 square miles; bounded by the Westpark Tollway to the north, 59 and Bissonnet to the south, Beltway 8 to the west, and Hillcroft to the east. For us, it's pretty much about the rich food scene. Generally speaking, you will find predominantly South Asian establishments near Hillcroft and 59, where a bronze Ghandi monument marks the entrance to the newly established Mahatma Ghandi district. As you head further west through the district you head east on your culinary adventure. Running for miles along Bellaire Boulevard is Chinatown which boasts hundreds of restaurants and shopping malls frequented by people of different ethnicities. We approached the task of documenting this neighborhood with great zeal but were soon daunted by the dizzying array of options. Our list is only the tip of the iceberg, there is simply so much to discover in this thriving international community.
Arts + crafts like crazy!
Our craving for Afghani fare led us to this fine eatery in little India. We always order the Mantu—light pillowy dumplings filled with lamb, onion and spices and topped with a savory yogurt lentil sauce—and Qabuli Palow, the famous Afghani dish of seasoned lamb shank served in a bed of saffron rice and pickled sweet carrots and raisins. A cozy cushioned seating area is offered for those who wish to sit crossed legged on the floor.
