For years the neglected child of central Lisbon, Intendente is enjoying a lively rebirth. Known for its rough edges, shady economic activities and its multicultural ambience, it's now embracing grit in a positive way. The neighborhood includes one of the city's biggest estates of late 19th century Portuguese-style architecture. Gentrification is well underway, but it is balanced with a thriving activist and cooperative scene. This unique national movement was reborn after the depression because the country's youth didn't give in under tough circumstances.
A gritty, interested place to grab a bite or mount your own bike
Counterculture and chill
Secadegas is the cosiest place you'll find in Intendente. In every sense: the food, the homely decoration reminiscent of simpler times, and the nicest staff around all help you feel at a friend's place. Besides the comfort food and delicious petiscos — the portuguese tapas—, you'll also taste some important national treats such as duck rice, black pork steak or “bacalhau com natas“. All as it were in your own house, but done by pros.
