St James’s

Defined by its four corners — St James’s Palace, The Ritz, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square — this grand and historic area of central London is best known for its art community and menswear credentials. But as a champion of independent retail in all its guises, it is increasingly finding new favour with those of us who question modern ideas of quality and value. Joseph Cheaney & Sons’ new shop tells the story of their shoes’ production. With pegboards in white corian and reeded glasswork, it stitches together the workshop aesthetic of their Northamptonshire factory — beautifully presented at 1:25 scale in a huge glass counter and pride of place at the centre of the space — with an expression in materials of pure luxury.
