Pasadena

Pasadena is the ninth-largest city in Los Angeles County- and the second oldest (incorporating in 1886). It is home to the Tournament of Roses, ArtCenter College of Design, Caltech, JPL, many museums and artists (including the author of this post!). It is nestled below the San Gabriel mountains on the northeast side of Los Angeles. It feels more like an east coast town with big houses on wide streets canopied with trees. It is about 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and thus provides a low-key, suburban hideaway without losing any of the flavor of city life.

You may recognize the Pasadena City Hall building if you watch Parks & Recreation (it was filmed here). The Pasadena City Hall building has been featured in many TV Shows, films, and architectural books. It is a beauty. Built nearly 100 years ago (in 1927) it is vaguely reminiscent of the Duomo in Florence. It overlooks a wide open plaza and beautiful gardens. If you stop by you will almost certainly see a wedding photoshoot or a limousine let out high schoolers in tuxedos posing before their prom on the tile steps in front of this epic monument.
