Pasadena

Pasadena is the ninth-largest city in Los Angeles County- and the second oldest (incorporating in 1886). It is home to the Tournament of Roses, ArtCenter College of Design, Caltech, JPL, many museums and artists (including the author of this post!). It is nestled below the San Gabriel mountains on the northeast side of Los Angeles. It feels more like an east coast town with big houses on wide streets canopied with trees. It is about 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and thus provides a low-key, suburban hideaway without losing any of the flavor of city life.

South Pasadena is a great spot for finding a used book in an old shop, walking the quiet streets to a small cafe then sitting for a few hours. If you do plan on enacting this fantasy, you will need to stop at The Battery to pick up a used book. It's best to walk in with an open mind. If there is a specific book you are looking for, you probably won't find it in the stacks and stuffed shelves. So go in with an open mind- let a new book find you, then carry it to a nearby cafe and enjoy. Repeat each weekend for a happy life.
