Pasadena

Pasadena is the ninth-largest city in Los Angeles County- and the second oldest (incorporating in 1886). It is home to the Tournament of Roses, ArtCenter College of Design, Caltech, JPL, many museums and artists (including the author of this post!). It is nestled below the San Gabriel mountains on the northeast side of Los Angeles. It feels more like an east coast town with big houses on wide streets canopied with trees. It is about 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and thus provides a low-key, suburban hideaway without losing any of the flavor of city life.

Houston's is classic Pasadena. There will be a wait. Because like I said, this is classic Pasadena. Pasadenians love Houston's. It is classy without sacrificing taste. It is dark and romantic, but still has a TV broadcasting some sports game. There are big leather booths that line the walls (the corner booth in the back is the best). Food-wise, there is a good selection of burgers and a good selection of beer. Their sushi is not sushi per se- it is more that Americanized 'sushi' (a piece of coconut shrimp somehow and vegetables wrapped in a rice and seaweed roll). You get all of the flavors of the world without really leaving the comforts of home. Come here, order a beer, a giant salad or a giant entree (everything is giant) and watch the people and you will know Pasadena.
