Terreaux

You’re in the center of Lyon, Place des Terreaux, where tourists and locals mingle around the Bartholdi fountain. This large public square is surrounded by the City Hall and the Museum of Fine Arts. Daniel Buren has marked some of his famous stripes, but time has done its work and the restoration of the square is a touchy matter. Dive into the small surrounding streets to find out the gems of this district, one of the densest in Europe. Strolling around, you will come across the Place Sathonay, the peaceful courtyard of the Museum of Fine Arts; Great restaurants; galleries and designer boutiques to check out. You’ll realize there is no reason to go to the square other than to use the metro.

Known by everybody and yet never crowded, the garden of the Museum of Fine Arts is a true refuge of calm in the city. When the sun comes out, the garden turns into an ideal spot to grab a sandwich, read a book, or simply have a break between two appointments. Accessible through two entrances, the garden is worth a detour to join Terreaux square to Édouard Herriot street.
