The East Village has been many things: punk rock, hardcore, gangster, folk, anti-folk, Nuyorican, experimental, beat, post-modern, Warholian. It even hit Broadway in Rent. Today, developers are trying to move in but locals are fighting to hold their ground in Alphabet City.

It’s hard to walk into Mast books without walking out with a hardback purchase. The well-curated selection of books includes limited editions, some hard to find covers, and books on photography and design. It’s small, well-lit, and reasonably priced. The lack of seating is probably a smart move or else you’d want to stay forever.
