East Perth Cemeteries is like a living history, or more accurately, a dead history of the city (boom tish! we’re here all week! try the veal!). And despite what you might be thinking, it is an amazing place to visit. Following the establishment of the Swan River Colony, as many as 10,000 people were buried on the site between 1830 and 1899. Almost 800 gravesites have been identified by a team of serious records detectives (perhaps better known as historians). What is revealed about the city’s early residents is fascinating – politicians to people of letters, surveyors to society figures to everyday Joes and Jills. Be sure to check when the gates open before visiting. Guided tours are available by appointment.
