Redfern

No place comes without history, and Redfern certainly has its tales to tell. Dating all the way back to the 1850’s, and more recently in the 20’s, when there were big numbers of Aboriginal people who migrated to Redfern from remote areas for employment opportunities on the railways, Redfern has always been an urban meeting place for Indigenous Australians from all over the country. Sure, it doesn’t take much Googling to find some dark facts on the place, and there are reasons why some Sydney-siders feel a little hesitant to walk through some streets. Well, they can keep their tan lines, teeth whiteners and Aperol Spritz. Let us walk you through a few of our favourite places in this beautifully misunderstood neighbourhood called Redfern.

With a genius name like Breadfern, you'd expect it to be good, right? And thankfully it doesn't fail to deliver. They do all your bakery favs and more, plus a decent coffee. The chirpy staff and funky fit-out give make the space feel warm and inviting. Most of the benches and shelving are from recycled timber and you can either sit and chill on the seats outside or takeaway and enjoy some people watching in the park across the street. Hot tip: if you're craving something of the pastry variety, make sure you get in early as most of the good stuff is out the door by 1pm.
