Schöneweide

Though not one of Berlin’s most visited tourist spots, Schöneweide, a district located a 30 minute train ride south east of the city center, is definitely worth a visit. Especially those who are into design and architecture will enjoy this corner of Berlin. You can spot famous industrial architecture, homes to experimental art, design workshops and co-working spaces within a genuine urban neighbourhood where gentrification barely happened yet. It’s no surprise that even internationally renowned artists like Ai-Weiwei have been looking for space in Schöneweide.

The “Behrensbau” or “Peter-Behrens-Haus” is a historic industrial building located at Ostendstraße 1–4. Its Architect Peter Behrens was important for the modernist movement, and several of the movement's leading names—including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius—in earlier stages of their careers. The building features a classic, brightly-lit atrium inside. Also don’t miss the ride with one of Germany’s last paternoster lifts.
