Schöneweide

Though not one of Berlin’s most visited tourist spots, Schöneweide, a district located a 30 minute train ride south east of the city center, is definitely worth a visit. Especially those who are into design and architecture will enjoy this corner of Berlin. You can spot famous industrial architecture, homes to experimental art, design workshops and co-working spaces within a genuine urban neighbourhood where gentrification barely happened yet. It’s no surprise that even internationally renowned artists like Ai-Weiwei have been looking for space in Schöneweide.

In 2006 the University of Applied Science Berlin settled here, building its second location in the old industrial buildings of the cable factory KWO and AEG buildings. The whole campus area at Wilhelminenhofstraße includes both landmark architecture and new buildings. Students can relax in front of the cafeteria on the beach at river Spree or enjoy a coffee in the large courtyard. Although you cannot tell its design background by the name, HTW’s design department is quite successful and well known in the German design community. The HTW is also one of very few public universities with a game design department.
