Gowanus

Gowanus is best known for the canal that flows through its heart, which happens to be one of the most polluted waterways in the world. The neighborhood around it, however, is one of the most vital and up-and-coming neighborhoods in Brooklyn: a magnet for artists, delicious food, and creative businesses.

Everyday, our city gets torn down and rebuilt bit by bit. Of the 19,000 tons of building waste thrown out daily, the best stuff winds up at Build It Green. The non-profit recycling center's warehouse by the canal is packed with everything from antique lumber to industrial dishwashers to books. These things come from demolished houses, restaurants, broadway theaters and film sets, so they're as eclectic as they are cheap. Redecorating? Need a giant plaster gargoyle? Look no further!
