











Gowanus is best known for the canal that flows through its heart, which happens to be one of the most polluted waterways in the world. With a menu driven by local produce, Freek's Mill delivers the flavor with its ever changing menu. The name is in reference to a former mill located at what is today the corner of Union and Nevins streets. At the time, the area was farmland and the Gowanus Canal, then called the Gowanus Creek, was a tidal inlet full of natural oyster beds.
