Gowanus is best known for the canal that flows through its heart, which happens to be one of the most polluted waterways in the world. The neighborhood around it, however, is one of the most vital and up-and-coming neighborhoods in Brooklyn: a magnet for artists, delicious food, and creative businesses.
Comfort Noodles
An upstate favorite originally from Syracuse, Dinosaur opened its massive Gowanus outpost in 2013. Brooklynites line up in the cold for hearty portions of pit-smoked meats and live blues and rock. The long menu features the best St. Louis-style ribs this side of the Hudson, tender hand-pulled pork and an awesome brisket sandwich. The main attractions may be the slow-cooked animals, but vegetarians can pig out on fried green tomatoes and the killer mac and cheese.
