South Slope is a quiet, laid-back, mashup of a Brooklyn neighborhood. Historical landmarks and treelined streets of row houses coexist with stretches of rugged industrial buildings. Nestled between the larger, bustling Park Slope and Sunset Park hoods, the more relaxed South Slope has come into its own in recent years as a destination for quality bars, restaurants and cafes.
This National Guard armory building from 1893 is a NYC Landmark and has been renovated by YMCA into one of the city's largest community recreation centers. YMCA has a no photo policy, so you'll just have to see the impressive indoor space consisting of four basketball courts and one-eighth-mile track in person.
