South Slope is a quiet, laid-back, mashup of a Brooklyn neighborhood. Historical landmarks and treelined streets of row houses coexist with stretches of rugged industrial buildings. Nestled between the larger, bustling Park Slope and Sunset Park hoods, the more relaxed South Slope has come into its own in recent years as a destination for quality bars, restaurants and cafes.
The Derby is the culmination of Open Source gallery’s Soap Box Workshop, where kids ages 7 to 15 create their contraptions from found objects and recycled materials. For 8 years the Derby has brought the neighborhood together to close out the summer by smiling and cheering on the young vehicular engineers.
