Footscray

Welcome to the west. The vital community of Footscray is often reduced to lazy evaluations of cheap rent, cheap food and the impending doom of gentrification. Through a fairer and meaningful view, you will find an inclusive area where inner-city living is at its realest, as has been for a long time. In a short single block you can find a university, an Ethiopian restaurant, a new bar & gallery, an Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, an organic produce co-op and a DIY community space. A conflicting place, impossible to pin down in one paragraph. Footscray was built on the stolen traditional lands of the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people of the Kulin nation.

Deep in residential West Footscray you will find the treasure that is Brother Nancy, charmingly wedged in between a classic neighbourhood milk bar and a bus stop. The team at Brother Nancy seem to have a genuine commitment to completely messing with your idea of ‘brunch’, without stooping to the lowly act of smashing a defenceless avocado. We’re fine with this. There is some seriously ambitious food being pushed out of the tiny kitchen here. A constantly-evolving menu that reads like a Parisian bistro via Footscray Market consistently dishes up unexpected hits. Say hi to owner Leigh and he will be your best mate by the time you finish your coffee. Could you also kindly ask him to bring back that glorious thing with the fried sesame & coriander polenta chips? Photography by Gianna Rizzo.
