Footscray

Welcome to the west. The vital community of Footscray is often reduced to lazy evaluations of cheap rent, cheap food and the impending doom of gentrification. Through a fairer and meaningful view, you will find an inclusive area where inner-city living is at its realest, as has been for a long time. In a short single block you can find a university, an Ethiopian restaurant, a new bar & gallery, an Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, an organic produce co-op and a DIY community space. A conflicting place, impossible to pin down in one paragraph. Footscray was built on the stolen traditional lands of the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people of the Kulin nation.

Earlier in 2016, Sam & Duncan opened the giant roller door to the instantly-popular brew bar, Hop Nation. The warehouse is located in a thick of factories in industrial Footscray. It also sits along an unofficial westside craft beer crawl, between stops at Two Birds in Spotswood and the well-stocked taps at Bar Josephine or The Night Heron (maybe grab a West City ale to stick with the local theme?) The cathedral-like space is seriously impressive, with a huge mezzanine overlooking the magical beer factory below. In a bid to make sure you never leave (as if you needed a reason!), there will often be a food truck parked out the front. They have found themselves amongst plenty of "Best of" lists and a loving place in our fridge. Current recommendation: ‘The Punch’ Mango Gose. But if you happen to read this during winter, let’s pray to the hop-gods that the barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout has been resurrected. Photography by Gianna Rizzo.
