Downtown Ithaca

In Ithaca, Downtown really is down town. Nestled at the bottom of 50 mile long Cayuga Lake and surrounded on three sides by hills, the city center looks up to Cornell University and Ithaca College and the older suburbs. There was a long-sustained rumor that the Little Rascals filmed their boxcar hill run on one of the tree-lined streets that heads straight into town, and when you visit you'll see why that was a hairy ride.

For more than a decade, the Ithaca Children’s Garden has been delighting children of all ages on 3 acres right next to the Waterfront Trail. Conceived and founded in 1997 by a team of volunteers, it began with Gaia the Turtle (a huge climbing structure) and has evolved into a series of gardens and play spaces that perfectly reflect the evolving priorities of the Ithaca community. The garden is designed to appeal to children, so picking flowers, watering, climbing, and exploring are encouraged and the Hands-on-Nature Anarchy Zone is a perfect example of this idea in action. You'll also find a kitchen garden, bird garden, bulb labyrinth, and rice paddy pond during your explorations. Beyond that – Ithaca Children’s Garden hosts year round educational opportunities for our community including a Festival of Fire and Ice and a Scarecrow Jubilee. Oh, and, if you haven’t been to their International Mud Day – you are missing out!!
