Scott's Addition

Just call it Richmond’s Pied Piper. Scott’s Addition, the gritty industrial neighborhood buffeted by the Museum District to the south and Northside to the north, is in the midst of a super-charged renaissance, enticing businesses and individuals alike to live, work, and play within its vibrant urban confines. Buoyed by historic tax credits, an unbeatable central location, and constant buzz, the neighborhood boasts a dynamic fusion of grit and panache: casual joints and gourmet eateries, upscale boutiques and eclectic antique shops, sleek apartments housed in renovated warehouses, and a host of creative and industrial businesses. But our little secret is out, thanks to national recognition as a premiere destination courtesy of the five craft breweries, two cideries, a meadery, and a whiskey distillery within these 152 acres.

While Scott’s Addition is home to breweries galore, it’s got one special spot up its sleeve: Black Heath Meadery, the city’s first mead maker. The world’s oldest fermented beverage, mead is made from honey and water. Of course, owner Bill Cavender takes it a step further, experimenting with a number of other ingredients, including apples, grapes, spices, and floral buds. And he does this with an important mission in mind -- to support the region’s local beekeepers and reestablish sustainable beehives. How sweet is that?
