Scott's Addition

Just call it Richmond’s Pied Piper. Scott’s Addition, the gritty industrial neighborhood buffeted by the Museum District to the south and Northside to the north, is in the midst of a super-charged renaissance, enticing businesses and individuals alike to live, work, and play within its vibrant urban confines. Buoyed by historic tax credits, an unbeatable central location, and constant buzz, the neighborhood boasts a dynamic fusion of grit and panache: casual joints and gourmet eateries, upscale boutiques and eclectic antique shops, sleek apartments housed in renovated warehouses, and a host of creative and industrial businesses. But our little secret is out, thanks to national recognition as a premiere destination courtesy of the five craft breweries, two cideries, a meadery, and a whiskey distillery within these 152 acres.

It’s fitting that artists Kyle and Johannah located their studio in the industrial neighborhood of  Scott’s Addition. As a blacksmith and mosaic artist, respectively, the husband-and-wife duo transform raw materials like iron and broken glass into striking contemporary masterpieces through time-honored skills and traditions. Kyle, who studied furniture design, learned blacksmithing through a traditional English apprenticeship, and Johannah, an art history expert, is self-taught in the ancient art of mosaic. Occasionally, the pair will collaborate on a piece for their shop, which boasts architectural ironwork, custom furniture, coat racks, mirrors, and frames. As the founders of RVA Makers, they’re also at the forefront of Richmond’s maker movement, promoting the city’s handmade culture.
