Located right on the Adriatic coast, Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. The biggest in Dalmatia. It has history dating back to Ancient Greece, and more visibly, Ancient Rome. The city is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, an expansive retirement palace built by the Roman emperor at the turn of the 4th century. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and very much a living monument, home to many of Split’s best restaurants, cafés and shops. Many visitors pass by Split on the way to the many islands accessible by its busy port without truly getting to experience all that this beautiful and historic city has to offer. There is nothing quite like getting lost within the labyrinth of ancient walls and finding the perfect café to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Dalmatia. PS: While often upstaged by its southern neighbor, Dubrovnik, Split too has been a filming site for Game of Thrones.
Located in a quiet square north of the Golden Gate (right beyond the large statue of Grgur Ninski and his famous golden toe), is the local antique market. Vendors set up shop every day in the summers and invite locals and visitors alike to peruse their trinket-laden tables for antique treasures. The modestly sized outdoor market is the perfect place to find a memorable artifact or perhaps some historic furniture to bring home.
