Split

Located right on the Adriatic coast, Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. The biggest in Dalmatia. It has history dating back to Ancient Greece, and more visibly, Ancient Rome. The city is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, an expansive retirement palace built by the Roman emperor at the turn of the 4th century. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and very much a living monument, home to many of Split’s best restaurants, cafés and shops. Many visitors pass by Split on the way to the many islands accessible by its busy port without truly getting to experience all that this beautiful and historic city has to offer. There is nothing quite like getting lost within the labyrinth of ancient walls and finding the perfect café to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Dalmatia. PS: While often upstaged by its southern neighbor, Dubrovnik, Split too has been a filming site for Game of Thrones.

Split is full of souvenir shops, from the outdoor market stands to the many shops tucked in the nooks of Diocletian’s Palace. My favorite is Aroma Dalmatia, located right across from Nadalina Chocolate Shop. You won’t find cheap plastic magnets and keychains here. Instead the shelves are lined with the best that Dalmatia has to offer: from local olive oil and wines to handmade lavender sachets and soaps. You’ll be sure to find the perfect gift to take home a bit of your Croatian adventure.
