Split

Located right on the Adriatic coast, Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. The biggest in Dalmatia. It has history dating back to Ancient Greece, and more visibly, Ancient Rome. The city is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, an expansive retirement palace built by the Roman emperor at the turn of the 4th century. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and very much a living monument, home to many of Split’s best restaurants, cafés and shops. Many visitors pass by Split on the way to the many islands accessible by its busy port without truly getting to experience all that this beautiful and historic city has to offer. There is nothing quite like getting lost within the labyrinth of ancient walls and finding the perfect café to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Dalmatia. PS: While often upstaged by its southern neighbor, Dubrovnik, Split too has been a filming site for Game of Thrones.

The delicate art of filigree is a celebrated Croatian tradition. The intricate silver metalwork can be found in many shops around Split, but this intimate shop tucked in (you guessed it) a narrow passage within Diocletian’s Palace. They say this 3rd generation family-owned shop is the only one in Split that still crafts each piece of jewelry by hand. The owner and his wife and son, who is training to take over the family business, kindly share the dedicated and patient art of filigree to visitors. The shop offers custom orders in addition to the many works proudly displayed in the store.
