Split

Located right on the Adriatic coast, Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. The biggest in Dalmatia. It has history dating back to Ancient Greece, and more visibly, Ancient Rome. The city is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, an expansive retirement palace built by the Roman emperor at the turn of the 4th century. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and very much a living monument, home to many of Split’s best restaurants, cafés and shops. Many visitors pass by Split on the way to the many islands accessible by its busy port without truly getting to experience all that this beautiful and historic city has to offer. There is nothing quite like getting lost within the labyrinth of ancient walls and finding the perfect café to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Dalmatia. PS: While often upstaged by its southern neighbor, Dubrovnik, Split too has been a filming site for Game of Thrones.

Trogir

If you are traveling in or out of Split by plane, it is worth your time to set aside a few hours to stop by Trogir, a small town near the Split airport. Trogir was one of the first "day trips" I took from Split, as it was only a quick bus ride away (both local and direct buses come frequently). In many ways, Trogir is like a quieter version of Split: there's the tower, the Riva, the market, the stone architecture with Greek and Venetian history. Spend the day wandering down the waterfront, and be sure to walk across to Ciovo, the big island next to Trogir. Go during golden hour, turn around, and be transported to a different era with the magical landscape you see.
