Split

Located right on the Adriatic coast, Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. The biggest in Dalmatia. It has history dating back to Ancient Greece, and more visibly, Ancient Rome. The city is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, an expansive retirement palace built by the Roman emperor at the turn of the 4th century. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and very much a living monument, home to many of Split’s best restaurants, cafés and shops. Many visitors pass by Split on the way to the many islands accessible by its busy port without truly getting to experience all that this beautiful and historic city has to offer. There is nothing quite like getting lost within the labyrinth of ancient walls and finding the perfect café to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the laid-back culture of Dalmatia. PS: While often upstaged by its southern neighbor, Dubrovnik, Split too has been a filming site for Game of Thrones.

Salona

Before Split, there was Salona. Salona is right by the town of Solin, which neighbors Split. It was first populated in the 1st millenium BCE by the Greeks, and later taken over by the Romans, who made it the capital of Dalmatia until it was abandoned in the 7th century. Today, visitors can still see the recognizable ruins of Roman architecture: an amphitheater, public baths, and a forum. Unlike most sites of ancient ruins, Salona is open to exploration. Wild grasses and flowers are taking over the crumbling stone. Paths, at times quite faint, are retraced by generations of visitors. Adults and children alike can be found climbing through the ruins, almost like a historical playground. Easily accessible by local buses, Salona is the perfect place to escape for a couple hours and explore a history of Dalmatia.
