Downtown & Yaletown

Vancouver's dense and diverse centre is home to the city's main arts and cultural venues, sports stadiums, major shopping districts and the wild, rambunctious nightlife of the Granville Entertainment Row. To its immediate south-east, the former industrial lands of Yaletown have transformed since the 90's into one of the densest residential neighbourhoods in North America. Packed with great restaurants and fun little shops, and bounded by a scenic stretch of the False Creek waterfront, it is a must for any visitor to the city.

Karameller is Swedish for "hard candy", and this recently opened Mainland Street shop is taking its stated purpose seriously. Over 100 hard and gummy candy varieties from Scandinavia brighten up this tiny storefront and make you feel like a kid again. Owner Louise Schönberg opened the shop because she missed candy from her native country after a decade of living in Vancouver. One can easily see why it was missed - the candy is delicious and really fun. Our favourite is the decadent Rambo Cola. The minimal interior design by Leckie Studio acts as the perfect backdrop for the colourful exuberance within. At $3.49 per 100g, grab a bag and scoop away.
