Eagle Rock

A huge boulder overlooks Eagle Rock from the north and the shadow it casts when the sun hits just right gives the neighborhood its name. The eagle, though, isn’t the only reason for its Small Town USA feel. Eagle Rock Blvd and Colorado Blvd are the only main veins where restaurants dotting along give the town its growing, and unassuming, foodie reputation - even if many of them have been around for solid decades. Since 1914, Occidental College has attracted scholars, and additionally, artists have also felt the draw. There’s a refreshingly slower pace, compared to the rest of LA, that completes the Craftsman house and Spanish bungalow setting.

Great Mexican food. It’s easily one of California’s top five attributes; prized is an understatement. So when family-owned restaurant CaCao Mexicatessan started serving up Baja California inspired Mexican dishes with attention to quality ingredients and a more foodie approach, we were ready. Carnitas de Pato: duck confit tacos with handmade tortilla, avocado, vinegar onions and radishes - yes. Mission Fig Mole Poblano: free range chicken with mole and Marcona almonds - also yes. Other favorites include Korean style BBQ short rib tacos and mole fries. Open for breakfast on the weekend. Lunch specials as well as happy hour Tuesday through Friday.
