Eagle Rock

A huge boulder overlooks Eagle Rock from the north and the shadow it casts when the sun hits just right gives the neighborhood its name. The eagle, though, isn’t the only reason for its Small Town USA feel. Eagle Rock Blvd and Colorado Blvd are the only main veins where restaurants dotting along give the town its growing, and unassuming, foodie reputation - even if many of them have been around for solid decades. Since 1914, Occidental College has attracted scholars, and additionally, artists have also felt the draw. There’s a refreshingly slower pace, compared to the rest of LA, that completes the Craftsman house and Spanish bungalow setting.

What started as a catering business became a Kickstarter restaurant success in 2014, and for good reason. As they say, “Barbecue doesn’t have to be bad for you. It just has to be delicious.” Oh, and it is. Southern smoked aromas of dry rub barbecue transport you to a simpler time of Americana classics: Mason jars full of iced tea, wavy crusted fruit pies that could only be freshly made by hand, warm baked beans, warmer corn bread muffins and, of course, the tender brisket, flavorful pulled pork and wood-smoked baby back rib feasts. Pull up a stool at this cozy corner’s bar for local beers on draft as you watch the game.
