Eagle Rock

A huge boulder overlooks Eagle Rock from the north and the shadow it casts when the sun hits just right gives the neighborhood its name. The eagle, though, isn’t the only reason for its Small Town USA feel. Eagle Rock Blvd and Colorado Blvd are the only main veins where restaurants dotting along give the town its growing, and unassuming, foodie reputation - even if many of them have been around for solid decades. Since 1914, Occidental College has attracted scholars, and additionally, artists have also felt the draw. There’s a refreshingly slower pace, compared to the rest of LA, that completes the Craftsman house and Spanish bungalow setting.

If any one place puts Eagle Rock on the map, it’s the mom and pop pizza pie legend Casa Bianca. Family owned since 1955, it’s quintessentially comfort Italian with red-checkered tablecloths, wafts of roasted garlic and a warm glow from the multi-colored twinkle lights. It wouldn’t be a stretch to recreate that classic The Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene here, but start with antipasto and absolutely order a pizza. The portions are huge, the crust is thin, it’s closed on Sunday (and Monday!) and there’s typically a line out the door and that’s probably just the way mama wants it. Make a reservation and come hungry.
